A Word For Me

Today before our afternoon nap (mine was 3 hours long!), Micah and I read from The Jesus Storybook Bible. He chose the story where Jesus calmed the storm with a word (Mark 4 & Matthew 8). I felt like it was speaking directly at me.

I'm going to go ahead and admit that at this moment there's a fairly big part of me that is not looking forward to labour. The status quo is good- I'm not anywhere near the "get this kid out of me" point that many of us reach at the end of pregnancy. Lots of these random contractions have been quite uncomfortable. And I know it's only going to get harder.

But when I read the end of the story, I felt admonished and encouraged all at the same time.

Then Jesus turned to his wind-torn friends. "Why were you scared?" he asked. "Did you forget who I Am? Did you believe your fears, instead of me?"
[...]
Jesus' friends had been so afraid, they had only seen the big waves. They had forgotten that, if Jesus was with them, then they had nothing to be afraid of.

No matter how small their boat- or how big the storm.

  1. ah, you made me cry! Jesus is so good.

You are a labour queen, sister. Remember the high, that you feel in between the waves? Remember that after you push that baby out you feel so GOOD and so POWERFUL that you just want to do it again? Labour is awesome. It is a beautiful way to see how nature and God and your body are made to work well and to do good. It IS intense, but you LIKE intense! Embrace it, lovely. You can SOOOOOOOOO do this. The endurance and strength and energy you will need, will be given to you when the time comes.
And remember, you wanted to try and take ahold of that pushing stage, try new things, more effective positions, which you didn't know about before! This birth will be the best of all three.

  2. That verse is so fitting. I shall remember it the next time I'm in labour. And Melissa is right. I too think of you as labour queen :) When it gets tough, just remember the power of all the prayers that are being said for you. God is with you and will help you get through this with grace and courage!
