Nana with an exhausted JoshuaThese first few days have been at once out-of-the-ordinary and ordinary, exciting and normal, easy and tough.
The house continues to function, with Eva going to school, kids needing meals, laundry to be done, etc. Mom and Andrew have picked up the reins awesomely in those areas. Tuesday felt a little weird but Wednesday and Thursday felt a lot more normal. On Tuesday while Eva was at school Micah just milled around, so unlike him. The big kids are adjusting well overall, though acting out from time to time. No surprises there.
My body is sore, not just from the birth but also from nursing so much- my hips and back are sore from all the side lying even though I use pillows for support. But recovery is going well. I'm probably doing a little too much but I just can't help it.
Joshua has not been a very contented baby. Periods of quiet alertness are extremely rare. When he is not eating nonstop he is fussing. He is easily roused, except for during his once or twice daily 3-5 hour stretches of sleep. Now, I expect frequent nursing. But what happens with this guy is he'll fall off the breast, seemingly content, and then within minutes he'll grimace and start to wail. Then he'll ask for more milk. Repeat. Just doesn't seem like regular newborn behaviour to me.
I now have a working theory: wheat sensitivity. I'm thinking that his tummy hurts and he asks for the breast for comfort, and then his tummy hurts more, etc, etc. Wave after wave until finally he konks out exhausted or the offending substance gets dilute enough not to bother him anymore.
On Tuesday night we didn't sleep at all- and I'd had pasta for supper with croissants for desert. Last night we had a wonderful night, with him sleeping from about 11 until 3, and then nursing contentedly from time to time until 10am. I'd had shish-ka-bobs with rice for supper. This morning was the best morning yet with finally periods of quiet alertness. And then I had 3 pieces of toast. This afternoon has been horrible. Inconsolable baby.
He also has skin issues. I expected newborn acne but he's kind of blotchy, kind of dry, and it seems really soon for the acne? And his eyes are still kind of puffy. I read that can be a sign of food sensitivity.
I'd love to hear from anyone with knowledge and experience with newborns and with food sensitivities. And I'd appreciate some prayer too. A mom feels so impotent when her baby is inconsolable! Especially since I have so many more tools in my parenting toolbag than I did when I was a new mom.
But I'm hopeful! I'm off the wheat and hoping for another great night with Joshua. I love it when he is just quietly looking around, taking in the world around him. Gives me a chance to take him in. His eyes are really blue! More blue than I remember either Eva or Micah's eyes being. I wonder what colour they will stay or become?
Sounds like Izabel at this age. Reading this brought back so many memories... yikes. First, I would recommend that you start taking probiotics. They pass through your milk and help with digestion, allergies/sensitivity and also with eczema as a result (which is caused by dairy and/or gluten sensitivity). Is it possible that the dry blotches on his skin are eczema spots? If so, I can also recommend natural products that will soothe his skin. You should avoid all dairy and gluten in your diet and also give him probiotics once a day (you can just put it in a little bit of water). The brand that we use and I would recommend is Nature's Way, but in any case the most important is that both yours and his contain lactobacillus rhamnosus (this is specifically for skin issues, such as eczema caused by food) and his should have lactobacillus reuteri which is the most important for newborns. I'd think that your diet adjustments and the probiotics will solve the tummy and skin issues, but if not then I can recommend you a homeopathic doctor that you can contact through email and skype. (Homeopathic remedies are safe for children and nursing moms as well.) Also, the colic hold was a really good one for Izabel at this age. Hang in there, this should pass soon too!! You'll be in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteHey Dana, sounds a lot like my boys! I was on a dairy free diet for about 4 months with both of them and I gave Koen probiotics (BioGaia drops) every day. The `grimace and wail' after seemingly being content was a lot like Koen due to his reflux so I really hope and pray that Joshua doesn't have that! Generally vomitting due to reflux would start at about 3 weeks of age so hopefully it doesn't happen!
ReplyDeleteYay for that 4 hour block of sleep last night! It's so unbelievable that he's actually here now, so happy for you guys. Glad that your mom and Andrew can help take care of everything so that you can focus on yourself and joshua right now!
you can also put the probiotics right on your nipple--I've done that numerous times. I had 2 babies with dairy sensitivity so that's what I thought of. But you know what it actually sounds like? Overproduction. Too much foremilk. Look that up, and see if it fits you and Joshua, though it's soonish for it to develop, and you haven't had it before.
ReplyDeleteYou know him best, so if you notice wheat sensitive behaviour, that's your ticket. Probiotics will def. help even if that is not his problem, and fiddle around with your diet. Diary is the most common sensitivity. Wheat is next most common, I believe...though I'm not 100% about that one!
I'll also ask my mom.

thanks for the post! I love to hear more about the five of you, and how Joshua is doing!!!
Thanks for your input ladies! I will try to get my hands on some probiotics asap. I'm pretty sure it's not overproduction since he's been like this since day one, when he was just getting colostrum (and I was eating lasagna).
ReplyDeleteThose two nerds in the picture look very happy!
ReplyDeleteCan't help with the food sensitivities, but I can advise not to give him any Buffalo Rib Steak.
Papa
Update: Joshua just woke up from a looong sleep. Woke up happy, and his face looks better. I fed him and he just nodded right back off. So far my theory is panning out!
ReplyDeleteI also called Lucia and Dr. Flores and they recommended some probiotics which Andrew just came home with. I'm currently doing research about their ingredients.
This is what the pedi recommended: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii
ReplyDeleteAlso found lactobacillus acidophilus at the pharmacy. But not the other ones you recommended, Rita. I'll stay off the wheat, take the adult saccharomyces boulardii probiotics for a few days, and see where it goes from there.
Congratulations, Dana! I just read this blog for the first time in a while, and I am so happy that you had a great birth!
ReplyDeleteI hope you figure out if it's wheat or other food sensitivity issues. I don't have any advice, but I feel for you. Hang in there!
I've never heard of this kind to be honest. The ones I mentioned are usually an ingredient in a multistrain probiotic and aren't available on their own. Since the doc recommended this one he probably knows that this is a good one in this case, although I'm a little weary because of the warning regarding people with low immunity (which infants are) and because it's a yeast (and in the case of nursing too much of it can lead to thrush). So I think it would be wise to only take them for a short period of time.
ReplyDeleteSaw the pediatrician yesterday and asked a little more about the Floratil (Saccharomyces Boulardii). He said he's seen very good results with it and that there is no association with thrush. I did some more research and found that:
ReplyDelete"Saccharomyces, however, is non-pathogenic with no relationship to that well-known yeast—Candida albicans. Saccharomyces actually has an antagonistic effect on candida infections."
also:
"While travelling through the intestinal environment saccharomyces functions by:
* Having antibacterial toxin effects
* Being antimicrobial
* Favouring the growth of probiotic bacteria
* Increasing the levels of important immune substances (such as secretory IgA)
* Having a beneficial growth effect on intestinal cells
* Increasing levels of naturally formed digestive enzymes (sucrose, lactase, and maltase)
* Increasing levels of short chain fatty acids necessary for intestinal health
* Reducing substances that increase digestive inflammation"

Joshua has been kind of fussy again the last couple of days so I decided to try it. Will report back regarding results.
