Your baby weighs about 13 ounces now and measures about 9 inches long. They are very thin, but completely developed at this point! Fat will continue to accumulate from here on out as your baby packs on the pounds getting ready for birth.
The bones inside the ears are hardening and so their hearing becomes more clear. They can distinguish between different sounds such as your voice and heartbeat. Eyes are developed now, but there isn’t any pigment in the colored part. Teeth buds appear beneath the gum line and the lips are completely developed and distinct from the rest of the face.
Lungs are developing. Right now, the lungs cannot transfer oxygen to the bloodstream, but by birth the lungs will be ready. The senses continue to develop at this time and your baby may experiment with touch by stroking their own face. White blood cells are forming now so that your baby can help fight illness and infections.
The pancreas and liver are developing now. The pancreas produces hormones and the liver breaks down bilirubin, a substance produced by red blood cells. Hand strength is very good now and the skin is pink and wrinkly. As the baby gains more weight the skin will become less transparent and wrinkled.
Things are going well. No real complaints. For some reason I don't need extra pillows for sleeping anymore. Sleep is generally pretty good. I'm quite adept at sleepwalking to the bathroom. I've been napping in the afternoons, but it's because I've been going to bed a little too late.
My belly is starting to peek out of the bottom of some of my shirts! I don't remember that happening until later in my other pregnancies. I guess Andrew and I should put together another belly photo shoot!
This morning I woke up feeling quite well rested and energetic. Then after I got out of the shower I felt completely drained, heavy, short of breath, desperate to sit or lay down. This happened once before a few weeks ago. I am guessing it was a low blood pressure moment? They both passed after a short while.
I took out my navel piercing the other day. My belly button is starting to become an outie. The kids are fascinated.
I'm still hungry a lot. We eat supper around 6:30, then I have a healthy snack or two at about 8:30 or 9:00. But often when I get into bed my stomach is growling! At that point I feel like I need sleep more than food so I just push through, though I have been known to get up and make toast.
I don't feel or feel like I look any fatter, but the scale says about 11 lbs now.
We have made some progress on names. I don't know if we've found "the one", but we have found a girl name that we all like. But it's a secret ;)
A blogger I follow, Rixa, had her second baby on Sunday. He was born at home, in water. She has just posted photos, no real details yet, but the photos tell the story of the hopes I have for our upcoming birth. Undisturbed by medical interventions or hustle and bustle, mother catching baby, everything allowed to proceed at its own pace. Doesn't she look beautiful in the closeup of her face when the baby is emerging?

The kids and I had a birthday party for Jesus on Friday, and they were

It's possible you had a low blood pressure moment, especially since a warm shower can open up your blood vessels and cause a drop in blood pressure.
ReplyDeleteIf it seems prolonged or happens on other occasions, you might be slightly anemic? I had shortness of breath, heart racing, and lightheadedness and my midwife Dx'd me low iron after ordering another blood test. I had good hemoglobin but low iron 'stores,' whatever that is...
Floradix iron supplement w/Vitamin C added helped me out tons (plant based irons, liquid form)--not sure you could get your hands on that in Mx? But you could get iron thru diet if you focused on it. Just don't forget the Vit C.
That may not be your problem though. Sounds like you have a good handle on things!
Wasn't Rixa's birth beautiful?? So amazing. All I wanted to do after reading that was have another one. I may have to declare myself a birth addict soon.
Have you thought about keeping a few snacks by your bedside? Then if your tummy growls you can eat a handful of almonds or something without any effort.
My newest theory about this is that the heat got to me. Both times I felt that way I had just gotten out of a hot shower, and the A/C wasn't running in the bedroom area. This year's summer heat has come on rather suddenly and I'd imagine it takes the body some time to adapt.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I'll keep anemia in mind and mention my episodes to my doc next time I see him. It will be right before I come to Canada so I could pick up Floradix when I'm there if need be. Though I'd be surprised/disappointed if I were anemic because I think our diet covers it pretty well. I even cook in a cast iron frying pan!
Good idea about almonds by the bed!
Yeah, reading your post again I'd say it sounds more like a heat related Bp drop...
ReplyDeleteI can't wait til you come in June! I haven't gone thru my diapers yet that's why I haven't replied wrt the diaper situation...
I would guess I have maybe 10 terrycloth medium sized diapers you can have? But I'll give you a more difinitive answer after I go thru them.
I am sorry your conference got postponed. :((( hopefully you can go again soon?
Do you have a reference for your stat re: GBS mortality outcomes? I'm not questioning you per se! I find it difficult to wrap my mind around such a drastic drop in infection rates not translating into a drop in mortality. Esp because pneumonia is such a big killer for newborns and GBS can cause pneumonia. Also wondering if the GBS protocol improves morbidity rates? Long term complications of early lung damage include asthma, etc...
Def. praying for you as you enter the home stretch, and hoping you have a wonderful, peaceful, empowering birth.
[and hoping to find a midwife next time around who doesn't believe a VBAC with (possible?) GD and Hx of baby w/ 'tight shoulders' would disqualify her from a homebirth!]
p.s. belly pix please? prob on the photo blog but I don't follow it unless you specifically link it...
ReplyDeleteI'm pumped about the dipes. They are fitted, then? Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThe conference is postponed to early October... perfect!
I used a number of sources for my GBS entry, but this article pulls things together really well: http://www.mothering.com/articles/pregnancy_birth/birth_preparation/group-b.html
Thanks SO MUCH for your prayers, I covet them! Praying for you as well.
